For the long-read final project I was thinking about writing about what makes letters so emotionally special. What is the reason behind the difference between hand-written letters and texts and calls through a phone? I want to relate this to my sleep-away camp I go to during the summers. There, the campers have no electronic devices, such as no phones, computers, and tablets. Therefore the only way of communication to the outside world is through letters. As a counselor at camp this year, I had access to my phone. As a result I could easily see the difference between my communication compared to my years as a camper. It is something about the physicality of mail that makes the communication experience so much more worthwhile. Although I talked to my mom quite frequently through the course of the summer, she still wrote me a couple letters. When receiving those I got a jump of excitement just seeing my name on the letters, while thinking it was another one I would be handing to my campers. So maybe for my project I will go into depth on the science of the excitement of letters. I could possibly also interview some people from my camp, either other campers or maybe the higher staff to get their input on the letters-only communication. I know I have the idea that I want to delve into, I just am not certain on how I want to approach the topic.
