After over a month of this class, the themes of letter writing can be applied in my personal life. Letter writing has a huge importance to me as that is my way of communication during my summers. At my sleep-away camp, campers do not have access to cellular devices, therefore the only way of communication towards those at home are letters. Each letter isn’t just words, but what feels like a warm hug from my friends and family thinking of me back at home. This year I worked as a counselor at my sleep-away camp. As a counselor I had access to my phone and had the ability to text and call my friends and family; however, over the course of the summer, my mom still wrote me a few letters. These meant more to me than any text message or phone call I had with her all summer. The time and effort it takes to write a letter simply does not compare to a simple text or call. A personal aspect of my letters is my envelopes were always covered with stickers from my little siblings. My letters in the large pile my counselors gave out were always identifiable. Another great part about letters is that they stay with you forever, never expiring like snapchats or forgotten in memories like phone calls. If I am ever homesick, referring to my letters is a great way to make a bad day better. Also writing letters as a camper is a great source to put feelings down on paper. With a busy schedule filled with activities every day, spending time at night helped my mental health out tremendously as a camper. Overall growing up, letters were an integral part of my childhood in which I still refer towards to remember my summers.
